Executive summary

Sherif is BDO’s Head of Global Natural Resources & Energy, a role that encompasses the services BDO provides across the globe to clients in the mining, oil and gas, and renewables sector. Sherif is also BDO’s National Co-Leader for Sustainability.

He has extensive experience leading BDO teams for numerous business valuations, mergers and acquisitions, independent expert reports (IERs) and other special investigation assignments. With extensive valuation experience spanning various industries with a focus on the mining sector, Sherif has prepared over 700 independent expert reports, solidifying his reputation as a leader in Australia’s financial sector.

Sherif’s valuation experience covers small, medium and large businesses in both the private and public sector and extends across a wide range of industries with a focus on the mining sector. His valuation reports have been required for many different purposes including transaction support, capital raising, taxation, change of ownership, disputes between owners, etc.

Sherif has also prepared numerous independent expert reports and reports for other special investigation assignments. He has extensive experience in litigation and forensic matters in the Federal, Supreme and Family Courts as well as the Singapore International Arbitration Centre.

He has over 35 years’ experience in executive leadership, corporate advisory, and finance roles in Australia and Europe. Sherif commenced his career in 1987 with BDO in London, he moved to Perth permanently in 1997 and was admitted as a Corporate Finance Partner of BDO in 2001. In 2007, Sherif was appointed as the head of BDO’s Corporate Finance & Deal Advisory team and in 2009 he became the Chairperson of BDO in Western Australia, a position that he held until 2018. Sherif is recognised as a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, as well as a CA BV (Business Valuation) Specialist as recognised by CAANZ.

Sherif has contributed significantly to the field through presentations and publications throughout his career.

Experience

  • Prepared over 700 public IERs, mainly for transactions in the natural resources sector
  • Acted as investigating accountant for over 100 initial public offerings (IPOs)
  • Expert witness for matters before the Federal Court, Supreme Court of Western Australia, and Family Court of Western Australia in relation to valuation, loss of profit matters, and schemes of arrangement
  • Contributed to drafting the independent expert section of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC’s) Information Sheet 214 (INFO 214): Mining and resources: Forward Looking Statements in 2016
  • Invited by ASIC to represent the corporate finance community in the consultation about revisions to INFO 214
  • Acted as liaison between ASIC and the joint committee of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (VALMIN committee) to finalise the wording and practical application of the 2015 edition of the VALMIN Code
  • Provided submissions to the Senate Inquiry into the Corporations Amendment (Crowd-sourced Funding) Bill 2016 and was invited to participate in the roundtable hosted by Treasury to formulate the Bill.

  • Contributed the chapter on Economic Evaluation to the book Study Processes Handbook, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, 2024
  • Regularly presents on corporate finance and sustainability topics at natural resources conferences globally, such as the Africa Mining Conference in 2021 and Africa Down Under Conferences 2019 – 2023
