BDO Private Wealth is pleased to have Jacob Mitchell from Antipodes Partners Limited join us in this instalment of Meet the Manager.
Jacob founded Antipodes in 2015 and has grown the firm to over AU$9 billion with offices in Sydney and London. Prior to Antipodes, Jacob was at Platinum Asset Management, where he was deputy CIO and a portfolio manager for the International Fund.
He also served as portfolio manager of the Unhedged Fund from 2007 to 2014 and Japan Fund from 2008 to 2014. Before this, Jacob was head of technology and emerging industrious research at UBS Warburg, Australia. He commenced his investment career in 1994 as a trainee investment analyst at high conviction values oriented Australian Equities Manager at Tyndall Australia.
Investment philosophy and approach
Jacob describes the Antipodes investment philosophy as "pragmatic value". The focus is on finding resilient businesses at the right price and identifying mispriced opportunities in the market. This can include businesses with lower growth or those with higher growth potential, as long as they are priced relative to their growth and underlying business resilience.
With 31 investment professionals spread across six teams, Antipodes takes a global and all-sectors approach to investing. The teams are kept relatively broad to allow for cross-pollination and collaboration benefits. The firm invests in a relatively small number of the approximately 2,000 large-cap companies globally, operating in both developed and emerging markets.
Environmental impact and decarbonisation
Antipodes value investments in renewables and companies that are on the pathway to decarbonisation. Jacob states, “Active managers have an opportunity to actually be involved in the energy transition”.
In addition to a negative screen on tobacco companies, Antipodes also has a negative screen on power generators that generate more than 30% of their power from coal. The firm is committed to investing in companies that are on a pathway to decarbonisation and actively participating in the energy transition.
