Tell us about your experience joining BDO
My student experience joining BDO was great. Everyone was incredibly friendly and eager to assist with anything I needed, which made the transition smooth. Additionally, there were plenty of opportunities to connect with other members of the firm, especially those in the graduate cohort, which helped to build a strong professional network early in my time at BDO.
What was your biggest surprise coming to BDO?
The biggest surprise for me at BDO was the close relationships maintained among staff across all levels and teams. Partners are always approachable and frequently make time for coffee or a chat to get to know you and check in on how you’re doing. This culture extends beyond partners, as I have had the opportunity to build a network with colleagues at various levels and across different service lines within the firm. This inclusive and collaborative culture is one of the key reasons I continue to enjoy being part of the firm.
What have you enjoyed about working in your team? What didn’t you expect?
What I have really enjoyed about my service line is the variety in the work that I do. While many projects follow similar processes, each one is unique in terms of the type of review and the client I’m working with. Something I didn’t expect was the opportunity to build relationships with the clients. Since I often work with the same clients, I’ve had the chance to not only gain an understanding of the organisations but also get to know the stakeholders within them.
Where have you experienced the BDO values in the workplace?
I often see all of BDO’s values in action, but heart is the one that stands out most for me. Within my team, colleagues consistently check in on each other, offering support whenever needed. The value is also prevalent in client interactions, as we take the time to build relationships, asking how their week has been and trying to make the experience enjoyable for all parties.
How would you describe BDO’s culture?
BDO’s culture is very supporting and collaborative, and I find there is a strong emphasis on ensuring a work-life balance is maintained. As long as you ensure that you are remaining on top of your work, the firm encourages you to take the time that you need to ensure that there is balance in all areas of your life, and other members of the team will always try to support each other where required. The firm also encourages social activities, providing opportunities for the team to enjoy time together and build a network beyond the typical workday.
What makes working at BDO rewarding for you?
My role provides the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of people, both within and outside the firm. We work together towards a shared goal of delivering the best possible outcomes for our clients.
How have you been supported by leaders and managers at BDO?
Leaders/managers within BDO often ask about what additional support they can provide to enhance the experience at the firm. There are often open discussions around career goals and progression ensuring all staff feel supported in their professional development.
How does BDO support you to achieve your personal aspirations and career goals?
BDO provides flexible arrangements, such as the option to work from home to ensure that staff can balance their personal and professional lives effectively. Additionally, there are a lot of programs, including training initiatives and study support, that assist with professional development and help employees achieve career objectives.
