My Graduate experience in BDO's Business Services team

Archie joined BDO in February 2024 and is currently a graduate accountant in the business services team. Based in Brisbane, he is known for his dedication and curiosity. Learn more about his journey transitioning from university to full time work.

How did you find your student experience joining BDO?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my student experience at BDO, the team I have worked in has made it an incredibly comfortable transition from university to full-time work which I’ve really appreciated.

What was your biggest surprise coming to BDO and what makes you stay?

My biggest surprise coming to BDO was the lack of hierarchy, obviously people are in different positions and delegate work accordingly but the feeling of being able to approach absolutely everyone from partners to other graduates has been so beneficial to my development.

What have you enjoyed about your service line and what didn’t you expect?

I have loved the exposure to different businesses, from egg farmers to coffee companies to dog groomers, it’s been really cool to get to see and understand how each business operates differently and being able to help each one. I didn’t expect to have as much client exposure as I have at a graduate level which has been really exciting and rewarding.

Can you think of an example where you have experienced one/or any of the BDO values in the workplace?

I can comfortably say that the HUMAN value is at the forefront of how the business operates, to be authentic in our interactions is extremely important and can be seen around the office every day. If there is ever a question for a graduate, to have the ability to just pick up the phone and give the client a quick call pretty much defines being authentic and Human, I’ve really enjoyed this aspect of work.

How would you describe BDO’s culture?

I would describe BDO’s culture as extremely inclusive and lively, there is always something on whether it be a coffee, a run or a feed at the pub there is something for all types of people. I think the culture can be seen in the fact that people actually enjoy getting up and going to work because you get to spend time with mates.

What makes working at BDO rewarding for you?

It's pretty rewarding when you feel that your work is making a tangible difference to someone’s business, from advisory to general compliance, it’s a pretty good feeling to complete a job and see the impact is has on a business.

How have you been supported by leaders/managers in the firm?

As mentioned before to I was very surprised to feel the lack of hierarchy, everyone felt equally as valued as each other. The partners and managers have been very supportive often giving us opportunities that might be above our level but letting us give it a go make mistakes and importantly learn from them.

How does BDO support you to achieve your personal aspirations and career goals?

I think the ability to able to talk to anyone at any level creates a really comfortable environment for people to speak openly about what they want to achieve in their career. BDO definitely allows you to speak openly about what you are trying to achieve and at the end of the day if you’re happy then you are most likely performing better, the flexibility and ability to do secondments to different teams, places around Australia and the world is really exciting.
