Melissa Reid, Partner, Audit & Assurance and Accountants Daily Australian Accounting Awards 2021 Auditor of the Year
What do you value about working for BDO?
For me, it’s the positive culture and the way we care about our colleagues and our clients. There’s a real family feel.
From the day I started, BDO has supported my career progression and trusted me to deliver the best possible outcomes for our clients.
What attracted you to work at BDO?
I had heard great things about the culture and learning opportunities. At BDO, we have the best of both worlds. I get to work on large clients, similar to those of larger firms, but we are a small firm when it comes to relationships and a personal approach.
Do you think BDO lives its values? Which of your personal values aligns with BDOs values?
BDO lives its values through the way we undertake the work with our clients.
HUMAN and HEART are the values that resonate with my personal approach to developing relationships with clients.
How does it make you feel each day when working at BDO?
I feel lucky! I leave at the end of every day having made a difference or learnt something new. Life at BDO doesn’t get stagnant. There are endless rewarding opportunities and new challenges every day.
How does BDO support you to achieve your personal aspirations and career goals?
The learning and development program is fantastic. We have one of the largest IFRS teams in Perth and I get to learn a lot from being in the same office as this team.
BDO takes the time to understand which engagements I’d like to work on and matches my aspirations with where I can add value to clients.
Has working at BDO provided opportunities you wouldn’t get working elsewhere?
Yes, I’ve been given opportunities and responsibilities at an early stage in my BDO career. This has empowered me to learn. At BDO there’s a holistic approach to learning and to understanding the whole picture from our client's perspective.
I’m trusted to take on responsibility, there’s no limit dependant on years of experience, it’s solely based on ability.
How do you get to really know your clients, as people?
I enjoy working with people by building up relationships. It’s important to get engagement outside of work, to relate to clients and understand what they want to achieve.
What do you do to ensure you deliver exceptional client service?
I aim to be an adviser, rather than an auditor and work with clients to develop a solution that works for them.
The BDO values I most identify with are:
HUMAN and HEART are the values that resonate with my personal approach to developing relationships with clients.
