What do you value about working for BDO?
BDO has a sense of community. Regardless of what division you are in, everyone across the firm wants to see you succeed and is willing to offer support.
What attracted you to BDO?
I was attracted to tax at BDO specifically due to the exposure to a diverse range of clients and tax issues. BDO allows me to work with large multinational corporations, start-up companies, and everything in between. We are not limited to working with a specific industry, so I have gained exposure to a wide range of industries, including financial services, natural resources, technology, retail, and manufacturing. Due to the variety of clients, I have been able to provide advice on many tax issues and develop my knowledge in various areas.
How does working at BDO differ from where you have worked previously?
Overall, we have great clients at BDO who value our work and appreciate our expertise. It makes a massive difference when your clients value you, and I believe this is a reflection of BDO’s reputation and our culture of investing in relationships.
What has made you stay with BDO?
BDO is willing to assist and provide me with what I need to succeed. I have been able to work flexibly/remotely for the last three to four years which has reduced my travel time and made my quality of life better.
Do you think BDO lives its values? If so, how?
In my everyday work I see the values ONE and STRIVE being demonstrated. To deliver a complete service to our client, we collaborate with other divisions such as audit, business services and corporate finance, or even with other tax teams that may have greater expertise in a specific tax area. We aim to be proactive in identifying potential tax issues for our clients and providing the best possible outcome. We take pride in our work and act with integrity in our interactions.
How would you describe the BDO culture?
I have found everyone at BDO to be incredibly friendly and willing to spark up a conversation regardless of their position. For me, this is an example of the culture at BDO. It is one where everyone is accepted and treated equally. The firm encourages bonding days and getting to know your colleagues in a fun environment.
What makes working at BDO rewarding for you?
I enjoy being able to assist clients to reach the best outcome through advisory work. We often advise clients on tax concessions or exemptions that are available and can quantify their tax savings from applying those concessions.
How does BDO support you to achieve your personal aspirations and career goals?
BDO leaders often consult staff about additional support that can be provided to assist us in performing our tasks. For example, home office allowances to assist in purchasing equipment to make our home spaces more ergonomic. My reporting Partner and I discuss my short-term and long-term career goals and how I can achieve them. I receive mentoring from people who have achieved what I strive for at BDO. Our discussions are transparent in relation to career progression, and I always feel supported in my aspirations.
How has BDO/your leaders gotten to know you?
Many leaders at BDO have gone out of their way to have general conversations with me to get to know me. They have asked questions to understand where I am from and what my interests are. We often have conversations about what we did on the weekend or any plans we have coming up which helps them get to know me on a more personal level.
